Tournament review:
With the Xbox tournament in the books, today saw the first Mithril Knights PS3 Open Championship take place. After some hard-fought trials last weekend, 14 warriors sought victory with pre-tournament favourites being NightGodBroly, xXStrider and the elusive Vhoscythe. Alongside PS3 veterans, the Xbox was well represented by Ronjons and SOR Burzum, giving this tournament something of a “cross-platform” flavour.
The first round began with an impressive win for Ronjons, of the Resistance, defeating Viking_56 5-3, followed by SOR Burzum defeating Redwurd despite the latter’s evasive running and “axe tag” strategy. Amusingly, NightGodBroly announced that to make things interesting he would forfeit the tournament if anyone were to score 1 kill against him. When Yashahuja promptly achieved that feat, drawing first blood in Broly’s opening match, the Legend countered that when he made his stipulation he “DIDN’T MEAN KIDS!” Broly went on to win the following five fights, prompting Yash to call it a day. The fight of the round, however, was between DEMONSTOUCH and AznLisa23, which saw the former triumph after a mammoth 15 – 13 encounter.
Heading into round 2, Ronjons lost his war for the television set, and LOTR Conquest was defeated by prime-time TV. There was much gnashing of teeth as the Resistance man had to withdraw, leaving only the sound of lamenting women in his wake. This led to Viking_56 being reinstated, and fighting well despite losing out to SOR Burzum on Osgiliath bridge. DEMONSTOUCH and Straightcash had an excellent battle, which concluded with the latter eking out a narrow victory, and an unknown outsider, Da_king2010, gave a surprising and very convincing performance to defeat the skilful Will9113. In disappointing news, xXStrider decided to sit out this tournament, which meant that NightGodBroly advanced unopposed into the semi-finals.
Osgiliath bridge stood in ruins as SOR Burzum and Da_king2010 ascended to do battle on its long, desolate road. From the start, Burzum was unsettled by Da_king’s axe throwing, with the outsider scoring an amazing amount of hits with unnerving accuracy from distance. After eleven close-fought rounds, the score stood at 7 – 4 in Da_King’s favour, with many fights ending closely. Switching to the throne room at Helm’s deep proved a talisman of luck for Burzum’s Rohirrim warrior, with her taking the next fight, perhaps inspired by Theoden’s ghost, but Da_King fought back strongly, winning no less than five fights in a row to achieve an impressive and commanding victory.
Elsewhere, in the darkest depths of Moria, NightGodBroly and Straightcash sharpened their swords, preparing to do battle. Many believe that the secret to fighting Broly is not to allow him an early lead, from which he usually steamrolls to victory, but this is easier said than done. Despite Cash’s best efforts, Broly converted a 3-1 start into a landslide 10 – 2 victory. Cash fought well and several of the fights were close, but The Legend simply proved unstoppable, reclaiming the Dwarrowdelf for the NightGods.
The final:
After many hard fought battles and two weeks of competition, the final had arrived. NightGodBroly had fulfilled the expectations placed upon him by advancing through the tournament with barely a scratch on him, but Da_king2010 had proved an immensely talented wildcard entry, giving an especially compelling performance in trouncing Sor Burzum in the semis. XXStrider, Will, Straighcash, NightGodDeath and Sor Burzum crowded into the server to watch, first at the Rivendell waterfall and later on horseback and warg, following the fighters on the Pelennor fields.
As the first fight got underway, it was immediately apparent that something was different. Da_king dodged out of one of Broly’s combos before hitting him with a sliding fire attack and juggling the NightGod in the air to finish him with a colossal LB+O, suffering not a scratch himself. 1 – 0. Many were shocked at this start, having previously believed the final to be a foregone conclusion. The first match was not a fluke and each fighter traded wins until at the halfway stage the match stood at a 5-5 deadlock. Every fight was a titanic struggle; each player being familiar with every intricacy of the class. The growing audience watched a master class of warriorship.
As if the sight of someone worthy of his concentration has spurred him on, the start of the second half saw NightGodBroly play like a man possessed. He produced two almost perfect rounds under the keenest of pressure to move to a 7 – 5 advantage, finishing both times with a clinical combination ending with LB+O. Amazingly, Da_king was not cowed by this display and, with the game moving to the sandy expanse of the Pelennor fields, managed to once more level the score through sheer doggedness.
7-7. Things were getting tense. Broly was urged on by his fellow clan members. Surely The Legend would not lose his first 1v1 now? The next fight saw several scrappy exchanges, with the fighters each trying to gain an advantage. After trading combos, both were reduced to a mere slither of health, circling around each other to prevent an easy kill. Suddenly both closed and, reaching to their back, threw a desperate axe. In a dramatic finish BOTH connected and the tournament had its first double-kill!
8-8. What could separate these two? The competition was intense now, and both players had their game-face on. Could Broly take home the title for the NightGods, or would Da_king provide maybe the greatest upset in LOTR 1v1 history? It is said that in such moments, legends are born, but in this case there was one already present. Broly produced another two of the best rounds of duelling I have seen, defeating Da_king with a spectacular display of prowess. This unstoppable performance gave NightGodBroly the victory, and more importantly crowned him first Mithril Knight’s PS3 Open champion!
Final Thoughts: What a tournament final that was. The greatest Conquest duel I have ever seen. Congratulations to both players who fought well and like sportsmen. Even Broly offered a rare moment of sincerity when he told Da_king that he recognised his ability. The atmosphere of the match was epic, with a crowd of observers trotting around after the fights on wargback! It’s a shame we weren’t able to video the fight.
The tournament was a lot of fun and a success thanks to those who took part and above all to the organisation of SOR Burzum, who worked tirelessly to set this up. Unfortunately some “big name” warriors were missing.
Thanks again to everyone involved for a fun day and congratulations once more to THE LEGEND NightGodBroly.

Tournament Review:
After a long training session last weekend, the final was narrowed down to 16 brave warriors who would compete for the first Mithril Knights Xbox Open.
The tournament began with an upset as Lightingxxblade prevailed over the outside favourite LordXander, who had been very impressive in training; skilful tactics paid off to provide a turn up for the books. Other highlights included a close fought victory for SOR Burzum over UKH3enry in a match that was hanging in the balance before H3nry had to withdraw early, and an impressive display by ES Tiberon, defeating Cainreaker 10 – 6 in a result that would prove controversial given how the tournament would unfold.
The match of the first round, though, took place between Darkpally1 and Jonathan1515. Jonathan was a clear favourite going into this match, being a member of the Mithril Knights, but at the halfway point, with the score neck-and-neck, it became clear that Pally was giving the performance of his life. It was impossible to separate the two fighters as the score slowly advanced to 9 all. In the deciding fight both warriors were cagey, unwilling to make the first move for fear of being caught in a combo. After several minutes of tentative axe tag it was Darkpally1 that prevailed, finally eliminating Jonathan1515 in something of an upset.
Round 2 started with disappointment as ES Tiberon was forced to withdraw, to be replaced by his first round opponent, Cainreaker. This left Blitzkrieg Boys as the clear favourite, and he cemented this status with an impressive 10 – 3 performance against Darkpally1, who, as an archer specialist, had already progressed further than many expected. Ronjons met L Star 32 in the fight of the round, eking out an impressive 10 – 8 performance over the veteran all-rounder. Sor Burzum progressed with a dominating performance against FEAR FOOTBALL, while Cainreaker advanced against Lightingxxblade (who gave a very credible performance as a non-warrior player) on a server that was plagued with lag.
The semi-finals saw the upset of the tournament as MIGHTY Ronjons overthrew the impressive and seemingly unstoppable Blitzkrieg Boys. Ronjons pulled out the performance of his career to go through to the final 10 – 5! SOR Burzum then faced Cainreaker in the remaining semi-final in a match that many felt could go either way. Burzum is a Mithril Knights regular but Cainreaker, formerly of The Black Council, has a fearsome reputation as a HTDM warrior.
On the ruins of Osgiliath bridge both warriors closed to engage. Burzum began badly, almost instantly missing a shoulder charge, with Cainreaker taking full advantage of the mistake, and, after unloading several fire attacks, claiming the first kill. The second fight saw Burzum reduce Cainreaker to a slither of health thanks to some skilful combo work but the fight ended prematurely when Cainreaker managed to pull a crowdbreaker and knock her over the edge. Several impressive performances saw Cainreaker take the score to 7 – 4 before controversy erupted as Burzum was knocked off the bridge to the floor below and expected Cainreaker to dance upon her remounting. Instead she was met with an axe to the face and Cainreaker took full advantage to win the fight. The remaining two fights were won with style and skill by the HTDM player and Cainreaker advanced into the final with a dominating performance.
The Final: Venue: Osgilitah . The Mithril Knights' hopes were pinned on Ronjons to take home their own first Xbox open championship but Cainreaker was keen to rain on the parade. Taking an early and commanding lead, Cainreaker landed combo after combo, appearing the more aggressive of the two, to take a commanding 7 –1 lead. Never one to give up, Ronjons pulled back two rounds as time began to run out on the server. With the score at 9 – 3 a new server had to be found, and the players headed over to another Osgiliath bridge.
After 40 warriors, two weeks and countless hours battling, it was match point to Cainreaker. Could Ronjons keep the dream alive? Despite a noble effort it would prove impossible as Cainreaker simply dominated under the pressure and easily despatched Ronjons to take the first Mithril Knights championship!
Congratulations to Cainreaker!
Final thoughts: The tournament was great fun and a successful inauguration for the Mithril Knights. Unfortunately some of the pre-tournament favourites (Giaquinto, Vhoscythe) were unable to take part and, somewhat controversially, top seed ES Tiberon had to withdraw after beating the eventual winner Cainreaker in the first round. However, happenstance and skill favoured the best player on the day: Cainreaker gave a level-headed and clinical performance throughout his remaining matches and even in the final seemed completely impervious to nerves.
Thanks again to all who took part. Thanks to Dizzy and Watchmen for videoing our training round (sorry we didn’t get any video of the final). This was a great tournament.
Look out for the Scout tournament starting on the 9th of Jan. This will be played across a month or so and matches will be organised individually at the convenience of the players. The tournament brackets will be drawn up shortly so if you have not done so, contact SOR Mayhem on here or on Xbox to register. Every match will be videoed for Youtube as I am getting a video capture card.
